According
to Twitter’s latest transparency report, the company has seen a massive
spike in government requests for user data and requests to remove
tweets. The micro blogging company revealed that over the last 6 months,
the government requests for specific users’ data increased by 40%
compared to the previous 6 months and accounted to 2,871.
Twitter disclosed information, saying that the requests came from over 50 countries with the requests increasingly coming from all over the world, but the most active countries were Russia, Turkey and the United States.
In the last 6 months, Twitter saw an 84% spike in government demands to remove content from its website, with Turkey leading the battle by making 477 requests. It is known that the company has repeatedly clashed with the Turkish government and Twitter was even banned in the country in 2014 for a short period, because citizens used their micro blogs to implicate the Prime Minister Erdogan in corruption allegations ahead of the national elections.
In the meantime, the United States made about 1,622 requests for users’ data, and Twitter complied in 80% of cases. Twitter is currently suing the American government to loosen restrictions over what it can say publicly about national security-related requests for user information. As for other countries, the situation is somewhat different: Twitter received 356 requests for user data in Turkey and complied with none of them, nor it complied with any of Russia’s 108 requests (up from 0 in the last report).
When publishing a transparency report, Twitter pointed out that providing this level of transparency entails some complications and sometimes the company gets tough questions and criticism about its decisions.
